Academic Figure Painting, Monday 15th - Wednesday 17th July, 10.30-4.30pm. (15 hours)
The Schoolhouse for Art, Enniskerry announces Academic Figure Painting Summer School 2018
Learning to paint the figure are fundamental practices in all areas of figurative art. Working in the academic style is designed to build the artist’s visual understanding of three-dimensional form and develop accurate drawing and painting.
In the first week of the course participants draw the figure in charcoal or pencil, an exercise which eliminates the challenge of considering colour and concentrates on accurate drawing, describing anatomical form and observation and creating an impression of dark and light.
The second week builds on the drawing work, introducing painting using a limited palette to describe the effect of light on the figure as well as the colour in the human body. Discussions and critiques can include painting technique, tools, mediums and materials, academic art history, and human anatomy.
The instruction throughout is based on the ‘sight-size’ technique which uses the viewing position of the viewer in relation to the subject and his/her paper or canvas to develop a high degree of accuracy. Anyone with an interest or with experience in drawing and painting the figure is welcome.
Participants may attend the workshop for either of the 2 weeks or both 2 weeks.
Nicholas Robinson was studio assistant at the Florence Academy of Art, Sweden for 2 years winning 2 awards whilst training there and has since been an Art Renewal Center (ARC) finalist and prize-winner and a Hennessy Portrait Prize nominee.
